Winds of Change

“Wind of Change” is a 1990 power ballad written by Klaus Meine, vocalist of the German rock band Scorpions. It appeared on their 1990 album Crazy World, but did not become a worldwide hit single until 1991, when it topped the charts in Germany and across Europe, and hit #4 in the United States and #2 in the United Kingdom. It later appeared on the 1995 live album Live Bites, on their 2000 album Moment of Glory, with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and on their 2001 unplugged album Acoustica.

The band also recorded a Russian-language version of the song, under the title Ветер Перемен (Veter Peremen) and a Spanish version called Vientos de Cambio.

The song is currently the 10th best-selling single of all time in Germany.

Worldwide, this single sold over 6 million copies, making it one of the top fifty best-selling singles of all time. The Scorpions hold the record for the best-selling single by a German artist and band.

Background and writing

The lyrics celebrate the political changes in Eastern Europe at that time – such as the Polish Round Table Agreement the increasing freedom in the communist bloc (which soon led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union), and the clearly imminent end of the Cold War.

The Scorpions were inspired to write the song on a visit to Moscow in 1989, and the opening lines refer to the city’s landmarks:

I follow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change

The Moskva is the name of the river that runs through Moscow (both the city and the river are named identically in Russian), and Gorky Park is the name of an amusement park in Moscow.

Not only does this song represent the political change in Eastern Europe but at home here in the US. My meaning is too many in power and corporations are busy counting the money instead of their blessings.  Corruption has run ramped to the point a person feels he or she can do nothing to solve a problem you might have stepped into.  But ya know something with time a life expectancy runs out on all that is good or bad.  Some would say in God’s time, others call on the troops to deal with situations and many send in the local officials and or attorneys to rid of resistance they encounter.

We once had a bond between Men, just look at any of our WWII VETS and tell me what you see and feel from any of these men after speaking to them you will know of my meaning here.  Pride, Respect and Honor is a common factor all these men carried and are rolling over in their graves for what they sacrificed in order for you to survive.  Have you earned that privilege? I think not if your dealings in life are to control, rap and pilfer from individuals for your profit and it amazes me to see you go to Church on Sunday.  Friday night, you were hand in hand with the Devil tormenting the weak helping to remove the life from their soul with the use of drugs and or violence.

The winds of change are upon us.  Like in War the order of the day is to Band Like Brothers for the men who stand in the shadows of justice and use it as a tool for their control know only tactics and truly have no real friends unless they are bought.  So when the money changes hands or the pressure is on and shines a light on the group the support runs from their directions and they will hang their fellow-man as for the rest not to be seen.  But ya know something no one is invisible and someone makes a mistake like in the Wizard of Oz Toto the dog removed the curtain and exposed the Great Oz.

  1. About time! Someone with some information on this. You’d think considering how popular Comic Book Adaptations are nowadays, some information would actually be pretty easy to find. Apparently not. Anyway, thanks for this! I appreciate it!
