This will be a rough explanation of Christmas celebration but in a way which is necessary. Around the world, today people have noticed the decline in America’s freedom and the dismantling of her constitution. Where ‘We The People’ had experienced an alien in our justice system aligned with special interest groups that if one challenged this structure at the time would experience complete alienation and others would fear this individual’s outcome that was seen as an example as not to challenge this structured and placed regime. But like a ship sliding through the mist and fog offshore determined to make safe landfall and storm the beach like a Viking, the true patriots of America were not going to let America fail.
So let’s use Leif Erikson, the great Norsemen explorer from Iceland where his father Erik the Red himself banished from Iceland, traveled further west to an area he named Greenland, where he established the first permanent settlement in 986. As Leif came of age he and his crew traveled from Greenland to Norway in 999 AD. It is here where Leif became a guard of King Olaf Tryggvason. Leif converted to Christianity after Pagan beliefs and was given the mission by the King of introducing the religion to Greenland. During his voyage back to Greenland Lief was blown off course where he and his crew saw for the first time a new land that was not yet discovered. Leif had heard of a voyage by merchant Bjarni Herjólfsson who was also blown off course form Norway to Greenland of a place with rolling hills, trees, self-sown wheat fields and grapevines. He next rescued two men who were shipwrecked in this country and went back to Greenland and Christianized the people there.
Leif then confronted Bjarni where he purchased his ship and assembled a crew of 35 men. Leif charted a reverse course that Bjarni sailed which landed him at Flat-Rock Land, possibly Baffin Island. After sailing further by sea, landing the second time in a forested place he named Markland, a Forest Land, possibly Labrador. Continuing two more days at sea, he landed in a green vegetation area with a mild climate and plentiful supplies of salmon. With winter approaching, he decided to encamp there and broke his party into two groups – one to remain at camp and the other to explore the country. During one of these explorations, Tyrker (his foster father for his father Erik, fell off a horse before they launched) discovered that the land was full of vines and grapes. Leif, therefore, named the land Vinland. Leif returned back to Greenland in the spring with a cargo of grapes and timber. On the return voyage, he rescued an Icelandic castaway and his crew, earning him the nickname “Leif the Lucky”. Leif was described as a wise, considerate, and strong man of striking appearance. After the voyage to Vinland Leif returned to the family estate of Brattahlíð, a southeast Viking settlement in Greenland and started preaching Christianity to the Greenlanders. Leif’s father Erik reacted coldly to the suggestion that he should abandon his religion, while his mother Thjóðhildr quickly became a Christian and built a church called Thjóðhild’s Church.
In books written the time of the journey takes place in the fall of 1000 AD. This is some 492 years before Christopher Columbus, where rumor has it he heard of the voyage in Iceland during 1477. In many parts of the country in America Leif Erikson Day is celebrated October 9th. A quest of a man where one travels far enough, you meet yourself.
So in America today we have Nordic immigrants to the United States, between the Norsemen and Native Americans a spirit of proud heritage runs through this land. A Christian nation formed long ago by European culture but once learned when combined with our ancient spirit was not so much a religion but a relationship with all things. With such spirit, only a fool who is against us in our own nation can calculate our strength by what they see but you can’t calculate what you can’t see which is the spirit of our strength, our heritage.
Viking a Native Spirit
In our present time a storm is upon America, but fear not for a giant has awakened that does not yield to unconstitutional submission. An ancient heritage where the hunter becomes the hunted a celebration of life and land, a communion.
Merry Viking Christmas
